The eastern Algarve, the Sotavento, is less built-up than the centre, and its courses feel it. Monte Rei, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course near Vila Nova de Cacela, is the best known; there are more around Tavira and Castro Marim, close to the Spanish border.
From Vilamoura it is 45 minutes to an hour, and from Faro Airport a little less, so these courses also work on an arrival or departure day. We plan the pickup with a margin for traffic and come back for you after the round.
